How many times did the cock crow?

In Mark’s Gospel Jesus tells Peter that he will deny him three times ‘before the cock crows twice’. In Matthew’s Gospel he tells him that it will be ‘before the cock crows’. So, did the cock crows once or twice?

In this case Matthew does not tell us how many times the rooster crowed, he simply tells us that the rooster crowed. In recounting past events or telling stories we don’t all emphasise the same details. In this instance, Mark simply provides a little more detail than Matthew does. Because Matthew and Mark do not provide identical stories this does not mean that they are contradictory. What these differences go to show is that Mark or Matthew did not copy this narrative from the other, hence we can have more confidence that they are reporting actual history. Either way they are corroborating each others events without collusion. Therefore, in this case Matthew and Mark provide complementary accounts.
