“What was God doing before Creation?”
Before we can use scripture to formulate an answer we must note that there is not a great deal of information pertaining to such a question, however, scripture does give us clues to what a viable answer might just be. We must also note that God has only revealed to us what he wants us to know, this is outlined quite nicely in Deuteronomy:
“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.”
From this we can see that God knows a great deal more than what he has chosen to reveal to us, God is omniscient -which means that he knows everything, and likely many things we don’t know.
First off, our starting block is that God has always existed, in other words he “existed” before the world in His three forms: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
God also “planned” everything, he planned the world, he planned you and I, he planned the crucifixion of Jesus, as seen in Act 2:23:
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
God has always existed in the Godhead, as indicated above, the Father, Son, Spirit. As a result God has never felt loneliness, the God head has always experienced fulfillment, have always enjoyed a perfect and most satisfactory communion before the word and the universe existed and came into existence.
We must also note that God does not need us, we are created out of his love and mercy, in a sense we are created because he “wanted” to create us. he did not need to create us, he create us out of his pleasure and for his pleasure, and for his glory.
Furthermore, the tough thing to grasp, which I think most people cannot easily grasp this, is that God has always existed “outside” of time, he is not limited by time because he created it, and we were also created within in. It is most certainly tough to ponder this idea with our limited minds, and this is nicely highlighted in Isaiah:
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
God’s thoughts are infinitely higher than our own, and we should trust him because of this, and because he has planned, using his wisdom, everything that we will experience.
So in concluding we can clearly deduce, with limited scripture that gives an answer to such a question, that God has always existed. The Godhead has always existed in perfect harmony with each other, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We can also see that God has planned everything, that there is nothing he does not know, and that he also planned Jesus’ crucifixion before its time for our salvation. We also know that we are God’s crown creation and that through his creations his glory is expressed. We can also deduce that God has only revealed what is important for us to know, and what we need to know to gain eternal salvation.
